Where Is My Main Water Shut-Off and How Do I Use It?

In most Green Bay homes, the main shut-off is in the basement where the water line comes through the foundation wall, next to the water meter. Turn a round handle clockwise, or a lever a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe.

What does it look like?

There are two common types: a gate valve with a round wheel handle and a ball valve with a lever.

Which side of the meter?

There may be a valve on both sides of the meter. The one on the house side is usually the one to use.

What if it won't turn?

Don't force it with a wrench; old gate valves can break. Your water utility can shut off at the curb stop, and a plumber can replace the valve.

Should everyone in the house know?

Yes. Show everyone where it is and hang a tag on it. In a burst-pipe emergency, the first minute matters.

How do I check for hidden leaks?

With everything off, watch the meter's leak indicator. If it moves, water is leaking somewhere.

When should I test the valve?

Once a year, close and reopen it to keep it from seizing. If it drips at the stem, have it replaced. See emergency plumber.

What about a cottage or rental?

Find the shut-off when you first arrive, not during an emergency. In seasonal homes, closing it when you leave is the simplest flood prevention there is. While you are there, check that nothing is stored in front of it, so it can be reached quickly in the dark.
