Quarries and railroads

The Town of Howard was established in 1835 and grew along Duck Creek as a center for mail, farming, quarrying and lumber. It was named for Brigadier General Benjamin Howard of the War of 1812, and was long known locally as "Duck Creek". By 1856 it had a school and was known for its four Duck Creek stone quarries; the last closed in 2002 and one is now Duck Creek Quarry Park. Three railroads once met here. Older homes near the original rail and quarry areas are the most likely to have aging cast iron drains, so a camera inspection is worth it before buying one.
